Cuban Film Night

Our next Cuban film night will be on Friday 13th September 6.30pm at Friends of the Earth, 54 Allison St. B5 5TH

The film is called ‘Viva Cuba‘  – a classic!

‘Viva Cuba’  (2005) Dir. Juan Carlos Gremata

In a tale akin to Romeo and Juliet, the friendship between two children is threatened by their parents’ social differences.

Malu is from an upper- class family, Jorgito is from a poor socialist family, proud of their social standing within the Revolution. How can their friendship survive in modern Cuba, if emigrating to the US is a possibility for some?

Free / donation. All welcome

Friday 18th October  6.30pm

‘Alicia en el Pueblo de Las Maravillas’ – Alice in Wonderland (1990)  Dir. Daniel Diaz Torres

A satire about the  lives of ordinary Cuban people. Alicia, a cultural instructor, is sent to a small town “Maravillas”, – Wonderland which is itself an exaggerated, but ingenuous reflection of Cuban realities. Can she find her way through the strange world she has fallen into?

and

Friday 15th November ‘Conducta’ – Behaviour  (2014)   Dir. Ernesto Daranas

The film focusses on a small group of young people trying to find their way through modern Cuba. A teacher supports the most troubled child in her class, Chalah, whose mother is a drug addict, and whose father is involved in illegal dog fighting.

Hope to see you there! All the films we have shown have been beautifully made, (on shoestring budgets) and deal with Cuban realities, as Cubans see themselves. As one of the group said, “It really makes you realise how shallow the western films we see more or less whenevere we want to, are.”

IF you’d like to get involved in organising local Cuba Solidarity events, we’ll be sending round details of our next planning meeting soon, no special skills needed bar taking on one of the various roles needed to keep the group active.
